Manyora: Babu Owino Will Succeed Raila Odinga Luo Nation But They Will Do Alot To Stop Him

The death of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga in October 2025 marked a turning point in Kenya’s political history, ending decades of dominance by one of the country’s most influential figures.

For years, Odinga stood as the undisputed face of opposition politics, commanding grassroots support, particularly in Luo Nyanza, where he was widely regarded as the region’s political kingpin.

His absence has now triggered an intense debate over who will inherit his political mantle and steer the future of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Raila Odinga served as ODM party leader for many years and remained a central force in national politics even when out of government. His influence extended beyond party structures, shaping alliances, election strategies and public discourse across the country.

In Nyanza, his endorsement was often decisive, cementing his role as both a regional and national political heavyweight. With his passing, ODM faces the challenge of maintaining unity while transitioning to new leadership.

Among the figures emerging as a potential successor is Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.

Young, charismatic and politically assertive, Babu has in recent years positioned himself as a natural heir to Odinga’s leadership within ODM and as a key power broker in Luo Nyanza politics.

His vocal support for Odinga and consistent presence in national debates have elevated his profile within and outside the party.

Babu Owino publicly declared his leadership ambitions in August 2024, stating that when Odinga moved on to pursue the African Union Commission chairmanship, he would be ready to take over ODM leadership.

This declaration signalled a clear intention to succeed Odinga and sparked debate within political circles. His bid appeared to gain traction at the grassroots level.

A survey conducted in April 2024 showed that 51.8 per cent of respondents in the Luo-Nyanza region preferred Babu Owino as Odinga’s successor, placing him ahead of other potential contenders.

Should Babu Owino eventually emerge as Odinga’s successor, it would represent a significant generational shift in Kenyan politics.

Such a transition could inject new energy into ODM, redefine its leadership style and influence its strategy heading into the 2027 general elections. A younger leader may also help the party connect more strongly with youth and urban voters.

However, the succession process remains uncertain. ODM risks fragmentation if leadership contests are mishandled or if rival factions emerge.

While Babu Owino’s ambition and support are evident, translating them into uncontested leadership and preserving Odinga’s legacy while expanding it will require careful strategy and political discipline.
