A family in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru County, is mourning the death of an eighteen-year-old Form Four student and accusing her school of negligence following what they describe as a delayed medical response.
Brenda Akinyi, a candidate at Njoro Girls Senior School, died last Saturday at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital after falling ill while at school.
Her mother, Millicent Anyango, reported that the student had complained of illness for several days but did not receive timely medical attention.
According to the family, Akinyi had been unwell in the dormitory for about three days before her condition deteriorated.
Anyango was alerted by her son Allan Otieno, who worked at the school as a casual labourer, after students informed him of Akinyi’s state.
She travelled to the school to pick up her daughter, only to find her weak, dizzy and unable to speak.
The student was first taken to Njoro Sub County Hospital and later referred to the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, where doctors established she had a blood infection.
She was admitted but later died while undergoing treatment.
Her mother maintained that the condition became critical due to delays at the school and believes the death could have been prevented.
The grieving family described Akinyi as disciplined, hard-working and hopeful as she prepared for her Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examinations later this year.
They stated that she had no serious underlying illness and was healthy when she returned to school earlier in the term.
The incident sparked public anger in Njoro, with residents demanding accountability from the school.
Police were deployed to calm tensions and prevent damage to property.
However, the Nakuru County Director of Education stated that the student had a history of illness and had received attention from the school nurse before her condition worsened.
A quality assurance team has since investigated the matter and forwarded a report to the Ministry of Education.
Akinyi’s body remains at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem examination.
