Gen Z Fills Tanzanian Streets With Nighttime Fury Ahead Of Tense National Elections

Tanzanian erupted with youthful energy on Tuesday night as Generation Z protesters poured into the streets just hours before the country votes on Wednesday.

A small Crowds carried signs and shouted slogans such as “Suluhu Must Go” and “No Reform No Elections.”

Many said they were tired of empty promises and growing joblessness.

The protests came after weeks of online organizing by Tanzania’s younger generation.

Hashtags like #MO29 and #TanzaniaProtests have filled social media feeds since early October.

What began as internet talk about corruption and the high cost of living has now become open defiance against the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi party.

Police units were deployed across several cities to control the unrest. In Zanzibar, reports of tense standoffs continued into the night.

Interior Minister Doto Biteko warned that anyone who disrupts the elections would face the “full force of the law.”

Human rights groups have criticized the government for arresting hundreds of activists and silencing opposition voices in the lead-up to the vote.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan is seeking another term after taking office in 2021.

She once promised political openness and press freedom, but critics say her government has tightened its grip instead.

The decision by the National Electoral Commission to block major opposition figures, including Tundu Lissu, has drawn anger from young voters who see the election as already decided.

Analysts expect President Suluhu to win, yet they warn that the growing unrest may shake investor confidence and spark further demonstrations. Tanzania’s 23 million voters, most of them under 35, are heading to the polls today with emotions running high. For many, this election is not just about choosing a leader but fighting for a voice that has been ignored for too long.
