Gladys Wanga’s poignant words—“Baba is back home! While it’s a day that many never wanted to see, welcome back home, Baba”

Echoed across social media as Kenya received the body of Raila Amollo Odinga, the nation’s iconic opposition leader and former Prime Minister.

Her message, shared on Facebook, captured the emotional gravity of a moment that has gripped the country in mourning and reflection.

On Wednesday, October 15, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced the funeral programme, affirming Raila’s wish to be buried within 72 hours of his passing.

The Kenyan delegation departed Mumbai at 2:00 a.m. Thursday, arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at 8:30 a.m. to a historic water salute and full state honours.

President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta stood side by side to receive the remains, symbolizing unity in grief.

From JKIA, Raila’s body was taken to Lee Funeral Home, then to State House and Parliament Buildings, where thousands braved barriers to pay their respects.

The national prayer service at Nyayo Stadium on Friday, October 17, will precede a journey to Kisumu and Bondo.
Culminating in a public viewing at Moi Stadium on October 26 and burial at his Opoda home on Sunday, October 19.

Oburu Odinga, now acting ODM party leader, joins the National Funeral Steering Committee in coordinating the farewell.

Kindiki emphasized the need to balance Raila’s personal wishes with societal values, ensuring a dignified and swift process.

Flags fly at half-mast across the nation, marking seven days of mourning for a man whose legacy shaped Kenya’s democratic journey.

Raila’s return is not just a homecoming—it is a national reckoning with history, sacrifice, and the enduring spirit of reform.

Gladys Wanga’s tribute encapsulates the collective heartbreak and reverence of a nation: Baba is back home, and Kenya stands still to honour him.
