Fresh details have emerged about the tragic death of a parent who lost her life while rushing to check on her daughter following the deadly fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil, Nakuru County.
Gladys Chebet, the mother of Faith Irine, died after the vehicle she was travelling in was involved in a serious road accident along the Nakuru Gilgil highway near the Kariandusi and Diatomite area.
Reports indicate that Chebet and her husband left Nakuru late at night after receiving distressing information about the dormitory fire that claimed the lives of several students at the school.
Photos of the late Chebet have since circulated widely on social media as Kenyans continue to mourn her sudden death.
Friends, leaders, and parents have shared emotional tributes describing her as a caring and devoted mother whose life ended while trying to reach her daughter.
Local leaders said the accident occurred shortly after midnight as the couple headed toward the school.
Chebet died at the scene while her husband sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.
In a heartbreaking turn of events, their daughter survived the school fire without physical injuries. However, the emotional pain of losing her mother during the desperate journey to see her has deeply touched many Kenyans.
Murindat Ward MCA PM Njoroge confirmed the incident and termed it a devastating tragedy for both the family and the wider community.
Another parent who spoke to local media revealed that the couple had first gone to the school before learning that their daughter had been taken to hospital together with other students affected by the fire.
It was during the trip to the hospital that the fatal accident happened near the Kikopey area.
Witnesses said several vehicles were involved in the collision, including a truck transporting cement, a Prado, and a private vehicle.
Investigations into both the school fire and the road accident are still ongoing as the country continues to mourn the victims affected by the two tragedies.
