Why Gachagua’s 2027 Presidential Ambitions Could End Up Boosting Ruto’s Re-Election Chances

As political preparations for the 2027 General Election gather momentum, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, continues to emerge as one of the strongest voices opposing President William Ruto.

However, political analysts believe that a presidential bid by Gachagua could unintentionally strengthen Ruto’s path to a second term.

Since his fallout with the President, Gachagua has built a strong following, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, where he has positioned himself as a defender of local interests.

While this influence could translate into significant votes in his political backyard, experts argue that winning the presidency requires a much broader national appeal.

The biggest challenge for the opposition remains unity. Several prominent figures, including wiper patriotic front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People's liberation party leader Martha Karua and Jubilee deputy party leader Fred Matiang'i, are also viewed as potential presidential contenders.

If multiple candidates remain in the race, opposition votes could be split across different regions, reducing the chances of mounting a formidable challenge against the incumbent.

Political commentator Ayub Mwangi argues that Gachagua’s outspoken and confrontational style may energize supporters but could struggle to attract undecided voters in regions such as Nyanza, Western, Coast, North Eastern and parts of Rift Valley.

The debate has intensified after remarks from former Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria appeared to encourage Gachagua to pursue the presidency.

Meanwhile, allies such as democracy for the citizens acting party secretary general and spokesperson John Methu, have openly urged him to seek the country’s top seat.

With United opposition leaders yet to agree on a single flag bearer, analysts say a divided opposition could hand Ruto a significant advantage heading into the highly anticipated 2027 contest.
