ODM Sends Message to Mt Kenya Residents After Kahiga's Remarks Over Raila's Death

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) fraternity, led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, has strongly condemned remarks made by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga that appeared to mock the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a viral video circulating on social media, Kahiga is seen making what many have described as “careless and disrespectful comments” while seemingly celebrating the death of the opposition icon.

The video has sparked outrage across the country, with Kenyans from all walks of life demanding accountability and respect for the fallen leader.

Governor Wanga, speaking on Monday morning, said the comments were an insult not only to the Odinga family but also to millions of Kenyans who revered Raila as a champion of democracy and justice.

“We as ODM will never associate with people who mock death or those who take pride in the suffering of others. Kahiga and his team have crossed the line,” she said.

“Let it be clear any leader still aligning themselves with that kind of politics cannot be our friend.”

Wanga further called upon residents of Mt. Kenya region to distance themselves from divisive leaders like Governor Kahiga and former impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying their actions were not reflective of the true values of the region.

Meanwhile, the Council of Governors (CoG) has convened an emergency meeting to discuss possible disciplinary action against Kahiga over his remarks.

Sources within the CoG reveal that a formal reprimand or even suspension from certain council duties could be on the table.

ODM has maintained that Kahiga’s views are personal and do not represent the Mt. Kenya community, which has historically worked with Raila Odinga in the spirit of national unity.

This reaction comes as the nation continues to mourn Raila Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025, in India and was laid to rest at his Kang’o Ka Jaramogi home in Bondo.

The party emphasized that Raila’s vision for unity and peace must not be tarnished by divisive rhetoric or political immaturity.
