Kenyans are still in deep mourning following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga who passed away in India after suffering a cardiac arrest.
His younger sister, Ruth Odinga, has now shared emotional details about his final moments before his untimely death.
Speaking to reporters Ruth, who is also the Kisumu Woman Representative said Raila was in good spirits and full of hope just a day before he died.
She revealed that he had even spoken about returning to Kenya soon.
“Raila was optimistic that he would be back home on Thursday, October 16. He was cheerful and relaxed,” Ruth said.
“He looked comfortable and told us he was feeling better after his medical checkup.”
Ruth and Raila’s youngest daughter, Winnie Odinga, had accompanied him to India for treatment.
She explained that the ODM Party leader was not in a hospital at the time of his passing but was staying at a resort with close family members after a routine medical review.
According to Ruth, Raila spent Wednesday, October 15, resting with his loved ones at the resort.
They laughed and talked about returning to Kenya soon.
His doctors had been pleased with his progress, and everything seemed normal until the morning of October 16.
That morning, Raila reportedly took a short walk before suddenly collapsing.
Despite quick medical attention, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Ruth described the shocking moment as one of the most painful experiences of her life. “We could not believe it. He had been smiling the night before. It was so sudden,” she said.
Photos shared earlier from India showed Raila dressed casually and smiling, giving Kenyans hope that he was recovering well.
His sudden passing came as a shock to the nation, sparking grief and sorrow across the country.
Many Kenyans have continued to celebrate Raila’s life, describing him as a courageous leader who fought for democracy and stood with the people until the end.
Ruth said the family takes comfort in knowing that Raila spent his last days surrounded by those who loved him most.
